Famous forts in India showing our architectural heritage

India is very well known for its ancient history, especially our forts. The monarchy back in the day considered forts as the primary protection system and a way of boasting to the world of how royal they are. There are a large number of forts that have undergone the test of time and have remained intact. It is remarkable how well planned and strong the designing and architecture has been. These forts are engineering marvels that attract tourists from all around the world. The forts gave rise to the arch, the dome, and the minarets.

Here is a list of a few famous forts of India which are the testament of our architectural heritage:

Red Fort, Delhi

The Red Fort is one of the most well know forts in India. It’s not only responsible for the accommodation of the Mughals but also political gatherings and ceremonies in time. The red fort, by the name, suggests that it is red in colour. It is made of the red sandstone. It is furnished with the most luxurious marbles, floral decorations, and double domes. It showcases the royal life and also was the home to the Kohinoor Diamond. Till this day, it holds great significance to our country.

Jhansi Fort, Uttar Pradesh

Jhansi Fort or Jhansi ka Kila is a fort situated on a large hilltop in Bangira, Uttar Pradesh. It’s very well known for being the part of Rani Lakhsmibai’s story of bravery and sacrifice. There is a clear distinction of fort design compared to that of north and western forts. The fort architecture stands out since their walls are made of granite and were 15-20 feet thick. For protection, the south wall had a perpendicular drop since it faced the city directly. The fort expands to an area of 15 acres.

Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur

Mehrangarh Fort is very well known for its huge wall, cultural heritage and beautiful architecture. This fort was built in 1459, by Rao Jodha, the chief of the Ranthambore clan. The great structure looks down upon the city from about 410 feet, creating a very strong presence. This fort was first built in 1459, but it expanded and improved in the course of 500 years. The foundation was laid on a rocky hill, 9km away from Mandore.

Agra Fort, Agra

Agra Fort is one of the most famous forts in the country. It is known for its significance and the uniqueness. It is about 2.5 km away from Taj Mahal. It was of major significance since it was the home to the Mughal dynasty. With seventy feet high walls that surround its 94- acre surroundings, it lies parallel to the river Yamuna. Build by Emperor Akbar, this fort has seen history being made and emperor’s change.

Fort Williams, Kolkata

Fort William is a fort in Kolkata. This fort is located at the eastern banks of River Hooghly. This fort extends to an area of about 80 hectares. The fort is made of materials like brick and mortar. The shape of the structure is a little unconventional. It’s known for its irregular octagonal shape with an area of about 5 km². The design of this fort was inspired by a star. This shape gave the fort a defence advantage in case of cannon firing and artillery attacks.
